The Twilight Forest portal does nothing
Dig a 2×2 hole, fill every block with water source blocks, surround it with flowers or plants, then throw a diamond into the water. The most common failure is throwing the diamond before the water is fully placed, or using flowing water instead of source blocks.
The Aether portal will not light
Build the glowstone frame, then use a water bucket on the inside of the frame. Flint and steel does nothing here: this portal lights with water, the reverse of the Nether portal.
