Best Minecraft Shaders (2026): 8 Packs Worth Installing + Full Setup Guide

The best Minecraft shaders in 2026 start with Complementary Reimagined. It is the most downloaded shader pack on Modrinth, it runs on both Iris and OptiFine, and its presets scale from weak laptops to strong GPUs. Install it with Iris + Sodium on Fabric for the best mix of looks and FPS. If you want a warm stylized look, get BSL; for a low-end PC, get MakeUp Ultra Fast; for near-photorealism on a strong GPU, get Photon or SEUS PTGI.

The 8 best Minecraft shaders for 2026

Every pack below works with the current Minecraft 26.x releases through a shader loader. Pick Iris for most setups (it runs on Fabric, NeoForge, and Quilt as of Iris 1.11), or OptiFine if you play on an older version or already have it installed. Download counts come from Modrinth, where each pack’s page lists its versions and Minecraft support.

Complementary Reimagined

Complementary Reimagined (r5.9.3, released September 2026) is the pack I tell friends to install first. With over 72 million downloads on Modrinth, it is the most popular shader pack on the platform, and it earned that spot: water reflects the sky, shadows are soft without smearing, rain leaves surfaces wet, and the whole thing runs on a sensible mid-range GPU at the default profile. The settings menu is the real strength. You can change nearly everything (exposure, bloom, cloud style, water color) from named presets instead of digging through raw values, which is why it works for beginners and tweakers alike.

There are two editions: Reimagined (the balanced one in the table above) and Unbound (heavier, aimed at high-end GPUs). Start with Reimagined. If your FPS holds above 60 at your normal render distance, try Unbound before you touch any settings.

BSL Shaders

BSL (v10.1.8, by CapTatsu) is the stylized pick: warmer light, stronger color, and a look that still reads as Minecraft instead of trying to turn it into a different game. It has over 31 million downloads on Modrinth, and the reason people stay with it is the customization. The shader settings screen has pages of toggles for lighting, clouds, water, and post-processing, and each one does what its name says.

First install, I turned bloom down a notch and raised the shadow resolution one step, and that was the whole “configuration”. Out of the box it runs a little heavier than Complementary on the same hardware, so if your GPU is borderline, start here only if the stylized look is what you came for.

Sildur’s Vibrant Shaders

Sildur’s is the oldest name on this list and the smartest pick if your hardware is the question mark. It ships in four tiers: Lite, Medium, High, and Extreme. Lite drops shadows entirely and exists for one job, which is making weak machines look better without melting them. Extreme (v2.02) is the current top tier and adds the full shadow, reflection, and lighting stack.

The practical move: install the heaviest tier your PC can hold at 60 FPS, then stop. Most people land on Medium or High. The pack’s sunsets and water are its signature, and they hold up even on the lower tiers.

MakeUp Ultra Fast

MakeUp Ultra Fast (v9.6, released October 2026) was built for exactly one audience: players whose computers cannot run the packs above it. With over 14 million downloads on Modrinth, it is the most trusted lightweight shader out there. It adds soft shadows, better water, and gentle lighting at a fraction of the usual cost.

If you are on integrated graphics or a laptop from the bargain bin, this is your shader. Drop your render distance to 8-10 chunks, install MakeUp, and you get a visibly better game without the slideshow. It will not compete with Photon on looks, but that was never its job.

Photon

Photon (v1.4, by sixthsurge) is the realism pick. Its global illumination and natural light behavior are the closest Java Edition gets to path tracing without an RTX card, and it shows: interiors bounce light the way you expect, and overcast days look genuinely overcast. It has over 29 million downloads on Modrinth.

Two things to know before installing. First, Photon is Iris-only, so OptiFine users need to switch loaders (see the install section). Second, it is heavy. This is a pack for a discrete GPU with headroom. On a mid-range card, expect to lower your render distance or shadow settings to keep it smooth.

Bliss

Bliss is a large community edit of Chocapic13’s shaders with a soft, painterly finish: gentle shadows, muted skies, and water that looks hand-painted. Builders and screenshot-takers love it because builds photograph well under it without the harsh contrast some realistic packs add.

One caveat: the latest Modrinth release (v2.1.2) dates from November 2025 and lists Minecraft 1.21.x support. If you play on 26.x, check the project’s page for a newer build before downloading, since shader packs occasionally need updates for new Minecraft versions. It has over 15 million downloads on Modrinth, so it is well maintained in practice.

Chocapic13’s Shaders

Chocapic13’s is the classic the genre grew up on, and the base that packs like Bliss were built from. It ships with presets ranging from Low to Extreme, so it still works as a pick-your-weight option in 2026, and its look (clean light, adjustable everything) has aged well.

I could not verify a direct file URL for the current build, so there is no download button above. Get it from the official CurseForge project page (chocapic13-shaders on CurseForge) and choose the preset that matches your GPU.

SEUS PTGI

SEUS PTGI (Sonic Ether’s path-traced global illumination shader) is the heaviest and most realistic pack on this list. It does real path tracing: light bounces the way it does in the physical world, which gives interiors and caves a look no rasterized shader can match. It is also the only pack here that genuinely wants an RTX-class GPU.

Distribution works differently than the others. Sonic Ether gates the newest builds behind a supporter program, so check the current terms on sonicether.com before you plan around it. Because I could not verify a direct download URL, there is no button here; if you have the hardware, it is worth the detour for screenshots alone.

Verdicts: which shader should you pick?

  • Best overall: Complementary Reimagined. Most players should start here and only switch if they want a specific look.
  • Best for low-end PCs: MakeUp Ultra Fast, with Sildur’s Lite as the backup. Both exist to make weak hardware look good.
  • Best realistic: Photon on Iris. SEUS PTGI wins on pure realism only if you have an RTX-class GPU and don’t mind the supporter-gated builds.
  • Best stylized: BSL. Warm, colorful, and still unmistakably Minecraft.
  • Best for builders and screenshots: Bliss. Soft light flatters builds.

How to install shaders on Java Edition

Shaders need a loader: a mod that teaches Minecraft to read shader packs. In 2026 that means Iris for most people, with OptiFine as the legacy option. If you have never installed a mod before, read our Java mod install guide first; the folder structure is the same. Our Sodium vs OptiFine breakdown explains why the Iris route wins on FPS, and the loader comparison covers Fabric vs NeoForge if you run other mods.

Option 1: Iris + Sodium (recommended)

  1. Install the Fabric loader for your Minecraft version from the official Fabric site. The installer adds a Fabric profile to your launcher.
  2. Get Iris. The easiest path is the Iris + Sodium bundle from the official Iris site (irisshaders.net); it drops both jars into your mods folder in one step.
  3. Launch the game once on the Fabric profile, then quit. This creates the mods and shaderpacks folders inside .minecraft.
  4. Download a shader pack from the buttons above. Do not unzip it. Shader packs load as .zip files.
  5. Put the zip in the shaderpacks folder. You can also do this from inside the game: press Esc, go to Options… > Video Settings… > Shader Packs…, click “Open Shader Pack Folder”, and drop the file in.
  6. Back in the Shader Packs screen, click your pack in the list, then Done. The world reloads with the shader active.
  7. If your FPS drops, open Shader Packs… > Shader Options… and lower the shadow resolution one step, or drop your render distance to 10-12 chunks. That fixes most performance complaints without changing packs.

Option 2: Iris on NeoForge

Iris 1.11 supports NeoForge directly, so you do not need Fabric if your mod setup already runs on NeoForge. Download the NeoForge build of Iris from the Iris project page on Modrinth (use the loader filter), drop the jar into your mods folder, and follow steps 3-7 above. You do not need Sodium on this route; the NeoForge build handles rendering on its own.

Option 3: OptiFine

  1. Download OptiFine HD for your exact Minecraft version from optifine.net. The version must match; a 1.21.x OptiFine build will not load on 26.x.
  2. Run the downloaded jar and click Install. This adds an OptiFine profile to your launcher.
  3. Launch the OptiFine profile. Press Esc, go to Options… > Video Settings… > Shaders…, and click “Shaders Folder”.
  4. Drop your shader .zip files into that folder, then select one from the in-game list.

Note that Iris and OptiFine cannot be active in the same profile. If you try both, pick one per launcher profile and keep them separate.

What about Bedrock Edition?

The packs in this guide are Java Edition only. Bedrock runs on a different rendering engine (Render Dragon), so Java shader zips will not load there. Bedrock “shaders” come as add-ons from the Minecraft Marketplace or creator sites, and quality varies wildly. If you play on console or mobile, search the Marketplace for highly rated shader add-ons rather than downloading files from random sites.

Download safety

Every download button on this page points at the file itself on Modrinth’s CDN: clicking starts the zip download immediately, with no landing page or ad wall. For the two packs without buttons, use the official project pages linked above. Never download shader packs from repost sites or YouTube description links, and never type your Minecraft or email password into any site that offers you a shader. A real shader pack is a zip file; it never asks for your credentials.

Troubleshooting

The pack doesn’t appear in the list. The file must be a .zip, sitting directly in the shaderpacks folder, not inside another folder. Restart the game after adding it; the list only refreshes on launch.

Black or purple screen when you enable a shader. The pack is probably incompatible with your Minecraft version, or your GPU drivers are out of date. Update your graphics drivers first, then check that the pack version lists your Minecraft version. Bliss users on 26.x should see the version note above.

FPS collapses. Lower render distance to 8-12 chunks, then reduce shadow resolution in the shader’s options. If it still struggles, switch to a lighter pack (MakeUp Ultra Fast or Sildur’s Lite) instead of fighting settings. Our performance mods guide covers the other half of the FPS equation.

The Shader Packs button is missing. You launched the wrong profile. Iris only loads on a Fabric/NeoForge/Quilt profile with the Iris jar in mods; OptiFine only works on its own installer-created profile. Check the profile name at the bottom of the launcher.

Everything is too dark or washed out. Open Shader Packs… > Shader Options… and adjust exposure or brightness. Complementary and BSL both expose these directly; most “my game looks wrong” complaints are one slider away from fixed.

FAQ

Are Minecraft shaders free? The six packs with download buttons above are all free. SEUS PTGI is the exception: Sonic Ether gates its newest builds behind a supporter program, so check the terms on the official site.

Should I use Iris or OptiFine for shaders? Iris, for most players. It runs on top of Sodium, updates to new Minecraft versions faster, and handles modern packs like Photon that OptiFine cannot load. OptiFine still makes sense if you play older versions or rely on its connected-textures features. The full comparison is in our Sodium vs OptiFine guide.

Do shaders work in multiplayer? Yes. Shaders are client-side, so they work on any server and in single-player alike. Other players see their own shader (or none); yours never affects them.

Will shaders get me banned from a server? No. Shaders only change how your game renders; servers cannot detect them and no anti-cheat flags them. They are in the same category as resource packs.

Can I use shaders alongside other mods? Yes, as long as everything sits on the same loader. Iris + Sodium on Fabric plays well with most Fabric mods; on NeoForge, use the NeoForge Iris build. Mixing loaders (Fabric mods on a NeoForge profile) is what breaks things, not the shaders.

Do these shaders work on Bedrock or console? No. Everything here is Java Edition. Bedrock needs Marketplace add-ons built for Render Dragon; see the Bedrock section above.
