Best Minecraft Tech Mods: Create, Mekanism, AE2 and 5 More Compared
The best Minecraft tech mods, by use case: Mekanism wins for automation (5x ore processing, Digital Miner, QIO logistics). Create wins for aesthetics and mechanical engineering. Applied Energistics 2 is the best storage mod at scale; Refined Storage is the easier pick for beginners. The other four fill the gaps: Thermal Expansion for first machines, Ender IO for compact cabling, Immersive Engineering for realism, Powah for cheap power.
Picking the best Minecraft tech mods is a deciding problem: you commit a world to a mod, its power system and its version. This guide compares the 8 biggest Java tech mods on their current 2026 versions, with verified official download buttons.

Create: machines you can watch working
Create (by simibubi) is the most downloaded tech mod in Minecraft history, with 215.7M+ downloads on CurseForge. Instead of black boxes, you build moving contraptions: water wheels and windmills generate rotational power, shafts and cogwheels carry it, and mechanical arms, drills, presses and deployers work in the open.
Minecraft 1.21.1 · NeoForge · v6.0.10 · Official download
What it does
Create automates through physics: crushers and mills process ores, harvesters run farms, trains and elevators handle transport. Generators produce Stress Units (SU) and machines consume them, so check any machine with a Stressometer first.
Power and logistics notes
Create never touches Forge Energy. Rotational power exists only while generators turn, so there are no batteries or energy cells, and logistics run on conveyor belts, funnels, smart chutes and trains instead of cables.
Config and setup gotchas
Create 6.0.x ships Flywheel built in, so one jar is enough. The classic failure is an overstressed network: contraptions stop when machines draw more SU than generators make.
Who it’s for
Players who build for the joy of watching things move.
Mekanism: the deepest industrial progression
Mekanism (by bradyaidanc) is the automation champion here: its ore chain scales from doubling to 5x multiplication, the Digital Miner mines a defined area with filters, and QIO gives quantum item storage.
Minecraft 1.21.1 · NeoForge · v10.7.19.85 · Official download
What it does
A full industrial progression: the Metallurgic Infuser makes alloys and circuits, Osmium and Tin are new ores, chemical systems feed multi-stage machines, the Quantum Entangloporter teleports items, fluids and energy, and the MekaSuit plus Meka-Tool are the endgame gear.
Power and logistics notes
Mekanism uses its own unit, the Joule, which converts freely with Forge Energy. The catch: the core mod ships no generators, so your first power comes from the Mekanism Generators addon or FE from Powah or Thermal.
Config and setup gotchas
Machines need input/output sides set with the Configurator; a machine that does nothing usually has its sides unset. Chemical machines need their gases in order, or the 5x line stalls, so build the chain one machine at a time and test each step.
Who it’s for
Players who want the longest tech progression with the biggest payoff.
Applied Energistics 2: digital storage at any scale
Applied Energistics 2 (by AlgorithmX2 and the AE2 team) turns your item hoard into a searchable database. One ME terminal shows everything you own, and pattern providers with molecular assemblers craft on request. Current stable is v19.2.18 for 1.21.1 NeoForge.
Minecraft 1.21.1 · NeoForge · v19.2.18 · Official download
What it does
An ME network has a controller, drives holding item cells (stored by bytes and item types), and terminals for access. Autocrafting uses a Pattern Encoding Terminal, a Pattern Provider beside assemblers or machines, and Molecular Assemblers, with a Crafting CPU holding crafting storage.
Power and logistics notes
ME networks run on FE, and devices draw it constantly. The defining mechanic is channels: in default mode each device needs one, and without a controller you get 8 per subnet, while each controller face provides 32.
Config and setup gotchas
The three beginner traps: the terminal opens but stores nothing (install a storage cell), items stop going in (the cell is out of bytes or item types), and autocrafting hangs (the pattern’s output needs a return path to the network). The jar is self-contained.
Who it’s for
Players with big factories who want the most powerful storage and autocrafting in modded Minecraft.
Refined Storage: storage without the learning curve
Refined Storage (by raoulvdberge) is AE2’s friendlier sibling: digital storage, wireless grids and autocrafting without channels. The controller powers the network, disk drives hold disks, and a Grid gives the searchable interface. Version 2.0.9 covers 1.21.1 NeoForge; 3.2.1 tracks Minecraft 26.1.2.
Minecraft 1.21.1 · NeoForge · v2.0.9 · Official download
What it does
One network for everything: item and fluid disks in 1k/4k/16k/64k tiers, crafting grids, wireless grids, importers and exporters, and the Autocrafter for autocrafting with simple patterns. No channels, no byte math, no controller-face limits.
Power and logistics notes
RS runs on FE with simple per-device usage. Logistics are block-based: importers pull from chests and machines, exporters push back, and wireless grids give access anywhere within range once upgraded.
Config and setup gotchas
Setup is controller, disk drive with a disk, grid. Two catches: autocrafting needs Autocrafter blocks with patterns plus enough network energy, and the default disk priority can surprise you.
Who it’s for
Anyone setting up a first digital storage.
Thermal Series (Thermal Expansion): the classic first machines
Thermal Expansion, by Team CoFH, is the granddaddy of machine-block tech mods: dynamos generate power, machines process ores, augments upgrade them. The 1.20-era restructuring split the old monolith into a series: Thermal Foundation (materials), Thermal Expansion (machines and dynamos), Thermal Innovation, Thermal Integration, Thermal Locomotion and Thermal Dynamics (ducts). Version 11.0.1 is the current Modrinth build for 1.20.1 Forge/NeoForge; 1.21.1 builds are landing on CurseForge and in modpacks.
Minecraft 1.20.1 · Forge/NeoForge · v11.0.1 · Official download
What it does
The Thermal formula is simple. Dynamos make power (Steam, Magmatic, Compression, Disenchantment, Gourmet and more), machines spend it (Pulverizer doubles ores, Redstone Furnace smelts, Induction Smelter alloys), and augments tune everything: speed, efficiency, side config, auto-output.
Power and logistics notes
Thermal speaks RF, which is interchangeable with FE in the modern ecosystem. Ducts (Thermal Dynamics) carry items, fluids and energy with filters and servos; on 1.21.1, the DynamiDucts mod revives the classic duct system.
Config and setup gotchas
Install Thermal Foundation alongside Thermal Expansion: the machines need its materials and the CoFH Core library. Then learn the augment slots: they are the whole point of the mod.
Who it’s for
First-time machine users.
Ender IO: one block space for every cable
Ender IO (by the Ender IO team, founded by CrazyPants) is the logistics specialist: item, fluid, energy, redstone and even ME conduits bundled into one block space. The headline change is the conduit block rewrite in 8.0.x: rebuilt core conduit logic and data storage, far more efficient ticking, and priority options on every conduit type. Current builds are 8.2.12-beta for 1.21.1 and 9.0.6-alpha for 26.1.2, all NeoForge.
Minecraft 1.21.1 · NeoForge · v8.2.12-beta · Official download
What it does
Beyond conduits: the SAG Mill (ore doubling with secondary outputs), the Alloy Smelter, the Powered Spawner, capacitor banks, the Farming Station, the VAT, and soul-binding for capturing mobs. The 8.x versions rebalanced recipes: copper alloy is gone and pulsating alloy is cheaper.
Power and logistics notes
Ender IO machines run on FE, and capacitor banks double as multiblock power storage. The real star is the conduit bundle: one block space carrying power, items, fluids and redstone at once, with per-connection filters and priorities.
Config and setup gotchas
The 8.x builds are stable in practice but still labeled beta: back up your world before updating, since conduit data storage changed in the rewrite. Configure filters in the conduit GUI instead of placing extra blocks.
Who it’s for
Builders who hate cable spaghetti.
Immersive Engineering: factories that look real
Immersive Engineering (by BluSunrize) makes industrial Minecraft look like an actual industrial site: multiblock crushers, refineries and arc furnaces, power lines strung between wooden poles, conveyor belts moving items. The current build is 12.4.2 for 1.21.1 NeoForge; check the official page for anything newer, since IE updates slowly.
Minecraft 1.21.1 · NeoForge · v12.4.2 · Official download
What it does
IE’s machines are multiblocks you build in the world: the Crusher (ore doubling with byproducts), the Squeezer, the Refinery and Distillery for biodiesel and ethanol, the Arc Furnace, the Diesel Generator and the Lightning Rod. The in-game Engineer’s Manual documents every multiblock with diagrams.
Power and logistics notes
IE uses RF/FE with a charming constraint: wires have voltage tiers and lengths, and overloading a low-tier wire burns it out. Power infrastructure is a build project here: stringing HV lines across your base on steel poles is half the fun.
Config and setup gotchas
Read the Engineer’s Manual first: multiblocks form by hammering the central block, and misplaced blocks won’t form. Wire length matters: relays extend range, each wire type has a max distance, and HV wire needs steel poles.
Who it’s for
Players who want their factory to look like a factory.
Powah: cheap power, fast
Powah (by owmii) does one thing and does it well: energy generation. Tiered cables and energy cells, solar panels, heat generators, and a reactor multiblock give you FE from early game to endgame. Version 6.2.10 covers 1.21.1 NeoForge; 7.0.4-alpha tracks 26.1.2.
Minecraft 1.21.1 · NeoForge · v6.2.10 · Official download
What it does
The Powah ladder: energy cables and cells in six tiers (Basic, Hardened, Blazing, Niotic, Spirited, Nitro), solar panels and thermo generators for passive power, furnators and magmatic generators for active generation, the Energizing Orb for charged crystals, and the reactor multiblock for serious output.
Power and logistics notes
Powah is pure FE and plays nice with everything on this list. Install Powah first, power your Mekanism machines or AE2 network from it, and skip every other mod’s power system until you feel like it.
Config and setup gotchas
Energizing orb recipes need the orb charged with the right energy tier, and uncharged crystals just sit there: check the tooltip. Cables have per-tier transfer limits, so a Nitro reactor feeding Basic cable wastes most of its output.
Who it’s for
Anyone who wants power solved quickly.
Getting started: installing these tech mods
All 8 mods are Java Edition only: no Bedrock versions, and these jars will not work on consoles or phones. Seven target Minecraft 1.21.1 on NeoForge; only Thermal Expansion’s current Modrinth build targets 1.20.1, so it needs a separate profile.
- Download the NeoForge installer for Minecraft 1.21.1 from neoforged.net and run it.
- In the launcher, select the new NeoForge 1.21.1 profile, run it once so the mods folder is created, then close the game.
- Drop the mod jars from the buttons above into the mods folder.
- For Thermal Expansion, repeat steps 1 to 3 with a 1.20.1 profile and add Thermal Foundation alongside it.
- Launch and open Mods from the main menu to confirm every mod loaded.
Never mix loaders: a NeoForge jar in a Forge mods folder crashes on startup. Every button caption names its loader. Our Forge vs Fabric vs NeoForge guide and Java mod installation guide cover the rest; the Minecraft 26.3 mods hub tracks the new 26.x versioning.
Download safety caveat
All 8 mods are free, and every button above links to an official Modrinth CDN file. The download starts immediately: no landing pages, no ad walls. Only download mods from their official CurseForge or Modrinth pages. Repost sites and “modpack download” blogs frequently bundle outdated or tampered jars. Never enter passwords or personal information into any in-game screen or mod installer; legitimate mods never ask for them. Back up your worlds before adding or updating tech mods, and test new mods on a fresh world first.
Troubleshooting
The game crashes on startup after adding a mod
A version or loader mismatch in nine cases out of ten: a 1.21.1 jar on a 1.20.1 profile, or a NeoForge jar on Forge. Match the button caption exactly; the crash log’s first lines name the offending mod.
A mod is in the mods folder but does not appear in-game
You are launching the wrong profile: the launcher keeps separate mods folders per profile version. Select the NeoForge profile, then check Mods on the main menu.
Create contraptions stop moving (“overstressed”)
Your machines draw more Stress Units than the generators produce. Add water wheels or windmills, or speed up the existing ones; presses and crushers are usually the hungriest.
AE2 terminal opens but stores nothing
Install a storage cell in an ME drive first. If items stop going in later, the cell is out of bytes or item types, so add cells or bigger ones. If autocrafting jobs hang, the pattern’s output needs a return path to the network.
Mekanism machines sit idle with no power
Core Mekanism ships no generators: feed the machines FE from Powah, Thermal or Ender IO, or install the Mekanism Generators addon. Also check side configuration with the Configurator.
Frequently asked questions
Can I run all 8 mods together on one world?
Seven of them, yes: Create, Mekanism, AE2, Refined Storage, Ender IO, Immersive Engineering and Powah all ship 1.21.1 NeoForge builds and interoperate. Thermal Expansion needs its own 1.20.1 profile until CoFH’s port lands. Pick one storage mod per world: AE2 or Refined Storage, not both.
Applied Energistics 2 or Refined Storage: which should I learn first?
Refined Storage, unless channels excite you: same core ideas with none of the channel math. AE2 is the better long-term pick for mega-bases.
Does Create use Forge Energy?
No. Create runs entirely on rotational power measured in Stress Units, and there is no battery, no energy cell and no FE conversion in the base mod. That is a design choice, not a missing feature.
What is the best tech mod for a beginner?
Powah plus Refined Storage: power solved in an afternoon, searchable storage with no learning curve. Add Mekanism’s ore processing as your first machine chain once both run.
Do these mods work on Bedrock, consoles or phones?
No. Every mod here is Java Edition only: .jar files for Java mod loaders. Bedrock uses add-ons instead. Our 2026 modpacks roundup covers Java packs; the Bedrock guides on this site cover the console side.
Which tech mod is best on a weak PC?
Create and Thermal Expansion are the lightest here. Ender IO’s 8.0 conduit rewrite specifically cut conduit tick cost. AE2 networks with thousands of crafting patterns and full Mekanism chemical plants are the heaviest: keep those bases modest if your FPS drops.
